Here's where to donate in Canada and the U.S. to support the Black community and help fight anti-Black racism.
On May 25, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died when a white police officer knelt on his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, while Floyd screamed, “I can’t breathe.”
Black people face injustices and prejudices like this on a daily basis. This is a global crisis.
There are many ways to support the Black community, including continuing to raise awareness about anti-Black racism and the pervasiveness of white privilege, amplifying Black voices, making a conscious effort to support Black-owned businesses, and donating to Black organizations, such as the ones below.
Where to donate in Canada
Black Health Alliance
This registered charity supports the well-being of Black Canadians.
Black Legal Action Centre LEGAL
This non-profit organization offers free legal services to low- and no-income Black Ontario residents.
Black Women in Motion
This Toronto-based organization supports Black female survivors of sexual violence.
The Black Mental Health Matters Fund
This fund supports Black therapists in Ontario to provide low- and no-cost mental health care.
Where to donate in the U.S.
Official George Floyd Memorial Fund
Set up by Floyd’s sister on GoFundMe, donations to this fund go towards funeral costs, counselling, legal assistance, and to assist the family with their grief.
Justice for Breonna Taylor
Breonna Taylor was killed by a police officer who opened fire in her apartment when she was sleeping. Donations to her GoFundMe page, set up by Taylor’s aunt, go towards covering the expenses following Taylor’s death.
The NAACP Legal Defense Fund
Donate here to support the American legal organization that supports racial justice.
Minnesota Freedom Fund
This organization supports and pays the bail for people arrested during protests following Floyd’s death, which happened in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
